The National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) is the institute active as a nodal institute at national level for acquisition and management of indigenous and exotic plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, and to carry out related research and human resource development, for sustainable growth of agriculture.

The National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources has its Headquarters at New Delhi.

The basic ideas behind the establishment of such specialized institutes are:

To plan, organize, conduct and coordinate exploration and collection of indigenous and exotic plant genetic resources.
To undertake introduction, exchange and quarantine of plant genetic resources.
To characterize, evaluate, document and conserve crop genetic resources and promote their use, in collaboration with other national organizations.
To develop information network on plant genetic resources.
To conduct research, undertake teaching and training, develop guidelines and create public awareness on plant genetic resources.

M.Sc. Plant Genetic Resources
Ph.D. Plant Genetic Resources

System of Admission:

Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree courses: The students for admission to M.Sc. degree courses are selected through an All India Entrance Test conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree courses: Admission to Ph.D. courses is made by IARI through an All India Entrance Test conducted by the Institute itself.

Number of Seats:
There is scope for enrollment of three students each for both M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses in PGR. In addition, there is scope for enrollment of one or two foreign student in each course.
