The concept of IITs is the brain child of the first prime minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. His vision was to come up with institutes of excellence in technical education which rival the best institutes around the world. Over the last fifty years, IITs have tried to translate his vision into practice.All IITs are governed by an IIT Council under the Chairmanship of the Union Minister of Human Resource Development.
