Universities in Delhi

An Overview

Amongst all cities of India, Delhi is considered to be the most favorable destination for pursuing higher education. The reason for this is chiefly because the city is home to several well-known universities. Each year, hordes of student throng to these famous centers of learning from all parts of the globe.

There are many Government Universities in Delhi which include the University of Delhi (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Delhi Technological University (DTU), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi and Jamia Hamdard.

Delhi also boasts of the largest open university i.e. The Indira Gandhi National Open University, commonly known as IGNOU, which has its administrative complex in South of Delhi.

The presence of institutes like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi has immensely helped the capital city Delhi in creating new frontiers in the field of new sciences including medical and engineering education. Keeping abreast with modern developments, the Government of India and the Government of Delhi are constantly restructuring and renovating the physical infrastructure as well as the research and education facilities to meet the ever-growing demand for quality higher education.

University of Delhi (DU) is known for its wide variety of courses both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Science, Commerce and Arts. Some of the leading colleges of the University which are known for their excellent educational facilities include the St. Stephens College, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Lady Shri Ram College of Commerce (LSR), Delhi School of Economics (DSE), Hansraj College, Venketeshwar College, Gargi College to name a few.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is considered as the best institute for pursuing higher education and research. The biotechnology programs offered by the university is one of the best educational programs offered by the university. The university conducts All India Entrance Examination, CEEB i.e. Combined Entrance Examination for Biotechnology; thousands of students appears for few seats offered by the university.

Jamia Millia Islamia is regarded highly for its Media courses; Engineering and programmes in social sciences and management are also highly popular.

Jamia Hamdard is known for its courses on medical sciences and management programmes.

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), which is the state technical university, is known for its professional courses like BBA, BCA, MBA, MCA, B Tech, M Tech, LLB, etc. In fact GGSIPU infuses the new wave of technological education in the NCT of Delhi.
