Schools & Centres

The school currently offers MA, M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes. The M.A. in Arts and Aesthetics is cross disciplinary programme combining a study of the Visual and Performing Arts, and Cinema Studies. The M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees offer specialized degrees in any one of the three streams at the school:
(i) Visual Studies,
(ii) Theatre and Performance Studies and,
(iii) Cinema Studies.

The Schools of Biotechnology offers M.Sc programs in Biotechnology under joint sponsorship of the UGC and the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The selection for admission to this program is done on the basis of a Combined All India Entrance Examination, usually held in the month of May. The School also offers PhD programs in various areas of research including Protein Engineering, Immunology Protein stability, conformation and folding etc.

The School of Computer and Systems Science was established in the year 1974. Since its inception the schools has been striving forth to meet the computing needs of differebt schools located in JNU as well for the development of the society. The School offers M.C.A, M.Tech and PhD programmes.

The School of Environmental Science was established in the year 1974 and the MSc. program was started in 1976. The varsity conductas entrance examination for admission to this program. It has also started offering M.Phil/PhD programme in Environmental Sciences since the same period.

The School of Information Technology which was established in the University in 2001 consists of the Centre for Computational Biology and Bio-Informatics (CCBB) (previously known as BioInformatics centre (BIC)), the Computer Centre (CC) and the Communication and Information Services (CIS). The focus of the School is on the use of information technology on education and research, and on the study of how the increased availability of information in all spheres of enquiry, be it biological information, geological information, economic information, etc. can be most effectively utilized in an academic context. The Centres (CCBB, CC and CIS) were existing as independent bodies in the University prior to the formation of the School.

The School of international Studies was established in 1955. It is one of the oldest schools of the University having forty-six years of its existence. The School has established itself as one of the premier institutions in the country for the study of international relations and area studies. The school offer following M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes of study:

Established in 1969, the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies has emerged in India and abroad as a major centre for teaching and research in Languages. The schools offers various B.A./ M.A. programmes and part-time Certificate and Diploma courses in Indian Languages and various other international languages.

The School of Life Sciences (SLS) was set up as per the report prepared by a working group headed by Prof. M.S. Swaminathan in the year 1970. The School has achieved rare distinctions in the areas of teaching and research in Life Sciences. The school is currently offering M.Sc and M.Phil programmes in Life Sciences.

The School of Physical Sciences (SPS) is one of the premier university departments of India in terms of research and teaching in physical sciences. The School offers Ph.D. (Physical Sciences/Chemical Sciences/Mathematical Sciences) and M.Sc. (Physics) degree programme in Physics.

The school of Social Sciences is the largest faculty in the university. Established in 1970, the School has emerged as a multi-disciplinary centre foir study and research in the field of History, Geography, Economics, psychology, sociology and so on. The school offers MA/MPhil and PhD in Social Science.

The Special Centre for Molecular Medicine (SCMM) has been set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the auspices of Jawaharlal Nehru University. The centre offers PhD and pre-PhD programs in the branch of Molecukar medicine which is open to those candidates who have background of biological sciences / MBBS/ B.V.Sc./ B.Pharm.

The Centre for Sanskrit Studies has been set up in JNU to provide students and researchers quality teaching and research programmes at M.A. and M.Phil./Ph.D. levels. The programs include various aspects of Sanskrit education including Veda, Sahitya, Darsana, Computational Linguistics, Sanskrit Linguistics, Social Thought , Indian Aesthetics & Poetics and Pali & Prakrit Studies etc.

The Centre for the Study pf Law and Governance has been established by JNU with an aim to provide research and teaching facilities to students on the contemporary issues on law and governance. The centre tries to translate theory of law and governance into practices by initiating debate, sharing research and encouraging dialogue between the academia, government, civil society and NGOs at local, national and global levels.

The centre has two distinctive programs of study:-
