Jamia Hamdard found its roots in a small Unani clinic founded in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed. He has envisioned putting Unani Medicine under scientific discipline and improving human and thus social health through Unani System of medicine. He named his clinic Hamdard that means ‘sympathy to all.’ The Hamdard, a commercial enterprise was converted into a Wakf on August 28, 1948. Later in 1964, Hamdard National Foundation was established for receiving and disbursing the earnings of Hamdard (Wakf) laboratories. Hamdard National Foundation was also made responsible to work on charitable causes in the domains of education, medical relief and the advancement of knowledge, consistent with the principles of the true teachings of Islam. For establishment of educational and research institutions Hakeem Abdul Hameed bought a land piece in South Delhi’s Tughlaqabad area and established several institutions with help from his friends’ as given under.
Year 1962: Hakeem Abdul Hameed established Institute of History of Medicine and Medical Research.
Year 1963: Hakeem Abdul Hameed, his friends and other associates established Indian Institute of Islamic Studies.
In the same year Hamdard Tibbi College was established in Gali Quasim Jaan, in Old Delhi, later, this institution was moved into campus of Jamia Hamdard.
Year 1972: Hamdard College of Pharmacy was established.
Year 1989: All the above-mentioned institutions amalgamated together to form Jamia Hamdard. The Ministry of Human Resources Development Government of
India accorded the Deemed

The then Prime Minister of
India Shri Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated the Jamia Hamdard Deemed University on August 1, 1989, he said, "This will enable (the Muslim) minority to go forward and help India to march forward".
