The TERI was registered in 1974 in Delhi as The Tata Energy Research Institute. It was renamed as The Energy and Resources Institute in 2003. The institute established the TERI University in 1998. The University Grants Commission (UGC) awarded the Deemed University status to the TERI University in 1999.

TERI University is a unique institution engaged not only in research that supports the objectives of sustainable development but is also a practitioner in the field and an organization that engages all types of stakeholders in fulfilling its mission.

The TERI University has been set up as an institution of higher learning to meet this set of needs for a rapidly developing India. But, as a global institution while it draws strength from the ethos and traditions of India, the University reaches out in sourcing knowledge from across the globe. Its major strength lies in the reservoir of knowledge, experience and research experience of the parent body TERI.

Its academic programmes have been structured around the research experience and skill sets gained in TERI over the last three decades. Having begun with doctoral programmes in 2001, it has gone on to offer various master’s degrees since 2003.

The doctoral programmes and research in the University centre concentrates on four basic themes: natural resources management, biotechnology, policy and regulation, and energy and environment.

On February 2008, TERI University signed MoUs with University of Iceland and North Carolina State University, USA. These inter-institutional MoUs were aimed to facilitate mutually beneficial exchange between students, faculty, knowledge, resources, and ideas between the two institutions.
Each year, TERI students are handpicked by leading companies during its campus placement process.

TERI University Important Dates

Eligibility Criteria For

  • MSc (Plant Biotechnology) and PG Diploma (Regulations in Agricultural Biotechnology)

Educational Qualification: A Bachelor's degree in Science /Engineering/Commerce/Economics/Mathematics/Statistics/ Geography with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.75 on a 10 point scale or equivalent as determined by the TERI University, wherever letter grades are awarded, or 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years/ semesters of the qualifying examinations), wherever marks are awarded. For candidates with a bachelor's degree in Economics/Commerce/Geography, a relaxation of 5%/0.75 CGPA could be allowed.

Selection procedure: Admission to the MSc programmes is made on the basis of a written test conducted by the University.Applications are invited from the candidates by advertising the programmes in the Employment News/ some leading newspapers in February/March every year.

The written test will be for one-hour duration and will consist of one paper with 100 multiple-choice questions. The questions will be divided into three sections:
  • Proficiency in English
  • Analytical reasoning
  • Any one section to be chosen from:
  • Biology
  • Mathematics
Wrong answers would invite negative marking.

Eligibility Criteria For MSc (Geoinformatics) and PG Diploma (Geoinformatics)

Educational Qualification: A Bachelor's degree in Science/Engineering/Statistics/ Geography with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.75 on a 10 point scale or equivalent as determined by the TERI University, wherever letter grades are awarded, or 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years/semesters of the qualifying examinations), wherever marks are awarded. For candidates with a bachelor's degree in Geography, a relaxation of 5%/0.75 CGPA could be allowed.

Eligibility Criteria For MSc (Plant Biotechnology) and PG Diploma (Regulations in Agricultural Biotechnology)

Educational Qualification: For Masters programme in Plant Biotechnology a minimum eligibility of a Bachelor’s degree in Sciences, preferably Life Sciences, with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years/semesters of the qualifying examinations), wherever marks are awarded, or a minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.75 on a 10 point scale will be required. For PGD, the minimum eligibility criteria are as follows:

(a) Masters degree in Life Sciences, Agriculture or,
(b) Environmental Sciences, Food and Nutrition and related disciplines or,
(c) BTech in Biotechnology or,
(d) BSc Agriculture or,
(e) Masters degree in Social Sciences/Economics or,
(f) Five-year integrated BA (LLB) degree or equivalent

Mid-career officers and corporate employees, sponsored by their organizations, are also eligible.

Selection Procedure: Admission to the MSc programme is made on the basis of a written test conducted by the University.

Applications are invited from the candidates by advertising the programme in the Employment News/ some leading newspapers in February/March every year. The hour long written test will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions. The questions will be divided into four sections:
  • Proficiency in English
  • Analytical reasoning
  • Biology
  • Mathematics
  • Wrong answers would invite negative marking

Admissions to the Advanced Postgraduate Diploma Program will be based on the evaluation of the applications and the nominations received.The University retains the right to modify the selection procedures as deemed necessary.

Eligibility Criteria For MBA (Infrastructure)

Educational Qualification- Stream I: Bachelor's degree with mathematics as a subject till class XII.
Stream II: Graduates with a minimum of two years experience in any of the following sectors namely government, regulatory bodies, industry, research/academic institutions, donor/consultant organizations.

Candidates in Stream I above will do three semesters of course work and one semester of major project. Candidates in Stream II above will do two semesters of course work and two semesters of major project (at their place of work).

Selection procedure: Candidates will be shortlisted based on the basis of CAT/GMAT/MAT score. Selection from shortlisted candidates will be on the basis of group discussions and interviews to be conducted bythe University at New Delhi.

Eligibility Criteria For MA (Public Policy & Sustainable Development)

Educational Qualification: Graduates with a minimum experience of five years in any of the following sectors namely government, regulatory bodies, industry, research/academic institutions, and donor/consultant organizations.

Selection procedure: The programme will draw support from the Department of Personnel and Training, Government of India. Selection of potential participants from the Civil Services will be in two stages. In the first, applications will be screened by the Department of Personnel and Training based on appropriate eligibility criteria as defined by the Department.

In the second stage, a selection committee, constituted according to rules of the TERI University (including a nominee of the Department of Personnel and Training), will interview the shortlisted candidates. The committee will select up to 30 candidates. The list of the selected candidates will then be forwarded to the Department for processing as necessary.

Applications from candidate s who are not civil servants will be screened, and the shortlisted candidates interviewed by the TERI University. The total number of candidates for the programme will not exceed 40 in any batch.
