The Common Aptitude Test for English (CATE)  is conducted by Delhi University (DU) for admission to BA (Hons) English in DU colleges. Based on CATE scores, students are admitted to various colleges for undergraduate courses in English in Delhi University.

CATE 2013 update - English entrance CATE cancelled only for 2013 - 2014 session

CATE was introduced by DU in 2009 as a centralised test to check and evaluate a student's aptitude for studying an English programme like BA (Hons) English. CATE 2010 saw 12 colleges' participation; in 2011 there were 17 colleges that admitted students in their English (Hon) programme through CATE and 21 colleges (including Indraprastha College for Women, Hindu College, Miranda House, Kamla Nehru College, Lady Shri Ram) had used CATE 2012 scores for their admission procedures.

CATE 2012 DATES

CATE 2012 Application Form

The OMR Application Form has to be purchased at any of the centers designated for the sale and receipt of forms from May 25, 2012  to June 04, 2012 by submitting bank draft of Rs. 350/- in favour of The Registrar, University of Delhi, drawn on any any branch of the following banks:
  • State Bank Of India
  • ICICI Bank
  • HDFC Bank
  • Punjab National Bank
The OMR Application Form will be given in an envelope along with the Information Bulletin on payment of the requisite amount through Demand Draft. The amount charged for the information bulletin an the application form will cover the Test Fees as well. No extra payment has to be made at the time of submitting form. The form once filled in as per the instructions, must be placed inside the same envelope and submitted at designated centres, in person. On the day of the test candidates must reach their designated test center at least 30 minutes prior to the commencement of the exam.

Points to Remember

1. The draft should be payable at Delhi. The timings for day colleges will be from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The timings for evening colleges would be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Also, forms will not be sold or received on Saturdays and Sundays.
2. Candidates must write their name, address, and contact number at the back of the draft.
3. Candidates must fll the OMR application form with either an HB pencil or a ball point pen. Also, candidates must use a black ball point pen for writing their address or for the purpose of putting down signatures.
4. Application forms without photographs and/or signatures shall be rejected. 
5. Application form has to be purchased/submitted in person and no applications will be accepted by post or courier.

CATE 2012 Eligibility Criteria

  • English PLUS any three academic subjects (including languages) OR
  • English PLUS 2 academic subjects (including languages) PLUS one vocational subject.
General Category aspirants should have a minimum of 45% marks in class 12th Board Examinations. Please note that no rounding off is allowed in the aggregate marks.
SC/ST aspirants and persons with disabilities are exempted from CATE, and their admission will be as per the rules set by the individual universities. However, passing score in class 12th Board Examination is mandatory.

OBC aspirants (non creamy layer) will be  given a relaxation of 10% of the minimum eligibility marks as prescribed for the general category candidates. Thus, the eligibility would be 40.5% (10% of 45 subtracted from 45%).

CATE 2012 Application Form

The OMR (Optical Mark Reader) Application Form along with the Information Bulletin will be available at all institutions designated above for the same and receipt of forms between May 25, 2012 to June 04, 2012, on payment of Rs.350/- through a bank draft drawn in favour of The Registrar, University of Delhi, drawn on any branch of the following banks :

CATE Syllabus

CATE is designed to test a candidate's aptitude for BA (H) English. The question paper will consist of two parts. Part A will comprise of multiple choice questions (MCQs) and Part B will comprise of descriptive type questions (comprehension and essay/creative writing). Candidates will have to attempt both parts of the question paper in the same sitting. In any case, it must be noted that only those candidates who qualify in Part A will have their Part B scripts evaluated.
The final aptitude quotient which is known as the CATE score, will be determined by collating the class 12th Examination marks(best of four subjects) and the CATE marks on a ratio of 30:70. A merit list is then compiled on the basis of the collation The participating colleges will admit candidates to the course on the basis of cut-off points declared by them after the CATE scores are announced.

How many colleges are participating in Common Aptitude Test in English 2012?
21 colleges are participating in CATE 2012. They will accept CATE scores to admit students to BA (English - Hons) in their respective colleges.

Will the colleges give weightage to Class 12 results to admit students to English Hons courses?
The participating colleges will be giving 70% weightage to the CATE score and 30% to your Board performance.

What is the eligibility criteria for CATE?
Any student with minimum 60% aggregate and at least 60% marks in English in 10+2 is eligible to apply for CATE.

When will CATE 2012 results be declared?
CATE 2012 results will be published in DU website latest by June 25, 2012 and first cut-off list will be published in mid-June, 2012.

Can I apply Online for CATE 2012?
NO, there is no online application process for CATE.
Can I purchase CATE 2012 application form by post?
No, the forms has to be purchased and submitted in person as no application form will be sent or received by post. However, if you are an outstation candidate, the form has to be filled out and signed by the candidate while the form form can be purchased and submitted by anyone on behalf of the candidate.
Are there any documents that have to be sent along with CATE application form?
No, candidates must not send any documents with their CATE 2012 application form. However, all documents will be verified at the time college admission.
Will candidates seeking admission through ECA / Sports quota have to appear for CATE 2012?
No, such candidates do not have to appear for CATE. They will be admitted by the different colleges as per the rules of the individual universities.
Will there be Negative marking in CATE 2012?
No, there will be no negative marking.

Will there be a second merit list for CATE 2012?
No, there will be only one and final merit list that will be published for all categories of candidates.

How will I get my CATE 2012 Admit Card?
Candidates can download their admit cards within three days after submission of DU CATE application form. In any case, the admit cards will be generated latest by June 06, 2012. If candidates can't find their admit card on the website, then their application might have been rejected. DU CATE website will have a list of rejected candidates. However, if your admit card is not generated on the website and your name is not there in the reject list too, then you must contact the Department of English, Arts Faculty, North Campus, University of Delhi, with a copy of the duly signed and stamped acknowledgement slip that as issued to you while form submission. The University will look into the matter.
