Gargi College is meant for girls. It was named after an enlightened woman, GARGI who figures in the Brihadaranyaka Upnishad of the Vedic Age. This College, have been awarded the prestigious College with a Potential for Excellence Grant by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the year 2004-2005.
Gargi College was established in 1967 by the Delhi administration. The College caters to arts, science and commerce streams in particular. It has a little over 2000 students, 150 faculty members and 110 non-academic staff in all. The college comes under the administrative control of Delhi University (DU).
Gargi College offers hostel facilities for out station students, though number of seats in hostels are limited and admission is offered on the basis of merit. All hostels are equipped with necessary facilities like mess, communication, entertainment, etc; safety measures are upto the mark. The college has placement cell which arranges for campus interviews during final year of studies. Gargi College students are preferred employees in government and private corporate sector.
