Year 1962: Hakeem Abdul Hameed established Institute of History of Medicine and Medical Research.
Year 1963: Hakeem Abdul Hameed, his friends and other associates established Indian Institute of Islamic Studies.
In the same year Hamdard Tibbi College was established in Gali Quasim Jaan, in Old Delhi, later, this institution was moved into campus of Jamia Hamdard.
Year 1972: Hamdard College of Pharmacy was established.
Year 1989: All the above-mentioned institutions amalgamated together to form Jamia Hamdard. The Ministry of Human Resources Development Government of India accorded the Deemed University status on Jamia Hamdard.
The then Prime Minister of India Shri Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated the Jamia Hamdard Deemed University on August 1, 1989, he said, "This will enable (the Muslim) minority to go forward and help India to march forward". Its founder Hakeem Abdul Hameed visualized Jamia Hamdard as a seat of higher learning in Unani Medicine, Islamic Studies, Biosciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and other knowledge domains.
Jamia Hamdard Deemed University offers numerous programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Faculties of Jamia Hamdard are intensively involved in research and development work. Diploma and Certificate courses are also offered through various faculty departments. Courses are offered in various areas of health and other applied sciences as well as humanistic disciplines. To help needy and deserving students Jamia Hamdard has institutionalized various scholarships.
The Hamdard Study Circle established in 1992, offers coaching facilities for Civil Services Exam to minority and poor students at affordable price.
The courses offered from Jamia Hamdard Deemed University are in high demand. Since providing education to everyone is not possible under one roof, Jamia Hamdard started offering various study programs through Open and Distance Learning mode. The degrees and certificates awarded from Jamia Hamdard are honored both in India and overseas for pursuing higher education and applying for jobs.
Jamia Hamdard Deemed University, though a minority institution opens its doors to all interested candidates both national and foreigners. The University conducts its own entrance examination for admission. Foreigners need to apply through separate admission channels. The University has limited numbers of hostels for men and women. Admissions into these hostels are exclusively made on the basis of merit.
Jamia Hamdard has placement cell to assist students of professionals programs, viz, Computers, Pharmacy, Management etc. in finding jobs. The placement cell makes necessary arrangements for interviews of final year students with prospective employers. In past years many national and international recruiters visited Jamia Hamdard for recruitment and offered lucrative pay packages.
